Rachel/Journal Story:

This practice started with a notebook and a whole bunch of goals I had no idea how to achieve.
Like most dreamers, I had all sorts of vision for my life: get out of debt, be a better mama, grow my business, run a half marathon without peeing my pants… but I struggled to keep myself focused on my goals without getting distracted by my hectic life.

I was working so hard, but at the end of each year I’d inevitably feel so frustrated because I was never really gaining traction in any area. I felt like if I could just keep my eyes on the goal I would get further, faster… so I tried to create a vision board. That was a fun craft, and it looked really pretty on my bulletin board but in no time at all I stopped noticing it-- which defeated the whole purpose.
One day, I thought about writing my goals down and since I was trying to recreate the idea of a vision board I decided to do something bold…

I wrote my goals down as if I had already achieved them…

and the results were instantaneous!

No really.

Instantly I felt excited and emotional (and even a little embarrassed) to be claiming big, audacious goals in writing. Some of these were dreams I’d never told anyone, and now here I was writing them down in the past tense and oh my gosh what if someone found this page and thought I had lost my mind? There were so many thoughts and feelings involved in that first journal entry and what I didn’t understand at the time was that that created a key element in goal achievement: emotion. When I combined the excitement of claiming big dreams in my notebook with my existing daily gratitude practice I found something life changing: a joyful, intentional practice that would become the foundation for countless goals I’ve achieved over the last decade.
